A week after the Sena told chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to add Girgaum to the new name to ensure that the historic locality is not forgotten, the Sena has now completely opposed the renaming.
The state government led by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, issued a resolution in march this year to rename Mumbai’s most famous and oldest beach Girgaum Chowpatty as Swaraj Bhoomi. Former Sena legislator Arvind Nerkar said that local residents are opposed to the renaming. Nerkar said that just adding the tag Girgaum to Swaraj Bhoomi makes no sense at all and they will not let it happen.
Sena corporator Surendra Bagalkar had demanded that the name Girgaum be added to the new name. Taking a soft stand, Bagalkar suggested that the iconic beach be called ‘Girgaum Chowpatty Swaraj Bhoomi’.
