Mumbai's overdue civic elections (BMC Elections) are finally scheduled for October 2025. Strategized far ahead, the elections were put on hold on administrative as well as political grounds. According to data shared by ABP Majha, the latest top-level meeting between members of Maharashtra's Election Commission and members of Mumbai Municipal Corporation settled the new calendar.
Why the Holdup?
Elections have been pushed back for over three years due to simultaneous state and national polls. The elections to the Lok Sabha were taken first, then the Assembly polls. After completing those, speculation was that there would be elections to BMC in April or May 2025. But with the latest, it is learned that there will be a gap after that.
One of the main reasons for the holdup is the upcoming Supreme Court case for restructuring the wards. The new Mahayuti coalition government had annulled the ward restructuring proposal already approved by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. This led to legal proceedings, with the Supreme Court hearing the case on May 4, 2025. One of the main issues in the case is whether the state government or the Election Commission has the authority to make a decision on restructuring the wards.
When Will the Elections Really be Conducted?
Even if the Supreme Court delivers its judgment on May 4, the election process cannot be initiated at once. The municipal administration needs at least 100 days' preparation period, including:
-
Revisiting ward restructuring
-
Making the reservation draw
-
Dealing with objections and closing voter rolls Other than the monsoon months from June to September, the latter months are also not suitable to conduct the elections. In that case, the authorities feel that the most suitable time to conduct the elections would be post-monsoons, in October 2025, perhaps after the Diwali festival. But if the Supreme Court's judgment is postponed, then there are chances of another postponement.
Political Strategies in Action
Against the backdrop of the new timeline, political heavyweights such as the BJP and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray group) are going in for the polls. The BJP is concentrating on consolidating its grassroot level, whereas Uddhav Thackeray's group is seeking to take back the BMC, its bastion going by the past. Conclusion The Mumbai civic body elections have been postponed many times because of judicial, political, and logistical delays. The verdict of the Supreme Court in May 2025 will play the key role in deciding the timetabling. However, given the preparation time and the duration of the rainy season, polls in October 2025 are planned. Simultaneously, political parties will continue to go about their on-ground work and, thus, this is possibly the most politically awaited local municipal election in Mumbai's history.
