Mumbai is about to get a significant infrastructure upgrade as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sanctioned an extension of the aged Coastal Road between Bandra and Dahisar. The ambitious initiative will enhance connectivity while reducing traffic on the western suburbs of the city.

BMC Issues Land Acquisition Notice

On Wednesday, the BMC put out an advertisement for the acquisition of land to pave the way for the north extension of the Coastal Road. The notice mentions changes in the status of reservation of 60 pieces of land, the majority of which fall under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). These changes are to be done so that the city's Development Plan (DP-2034) shows the alignment of the Coastal Road only up to Bangur Nagar in Goregaon.

Public Participation and Impact Sites

To make the process transparent and involve citizens, BMC sought suggestions and objections from citizens within 30 days. The concerns and feedback would be heard after that in a public hearing.

The affected land parcels span multiple locations, including:

  • Goregaon
  •
  • Malad
  •
  • Charkop
  •
  • Borivali
  •
  • Eksar
  •
  • Dahisar

Government officials explained that nearly 70% of the land is in government ownership, and the remaining ones are private properties in CRZ, restricting development in such areas.

Project Definition and Major Features

The extended Coastal Road will be a 17.6 km long road from the interchange of the sea link connecting Versova-Bandra to the Dahisar interchange. The project will also encompass the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) connector, and overall length of the project will be 22 km.

Key points of the proposed expansion:

Total Road Length: 17.6 km (from Bandra to Dahisar) + GMLR connector (4.4 km) = 22 km

Road Width: From 36.6 m to 53 m Connector & Interchange Lengths: 3.5 km, 10 m to 40 m widths

Wards Impacted: P-North (Malad), R-South (Kandivali), R-Central (Borivali), and R-North (Dahisar)

Importance of Extension of the Coastal Road

The expansion of the Coastal Road will result in significant relief in traffic movement, reducing the time taken, and creating seamless connectivity between the western suburbs and South Mumbai. Once completed, it will be a key connecting link for thousands of daily commuters, making travel convenient on other road networks.

With planning and land acquisition underway, Mumbai takes a step closer to developing its coastal infrastructure and improving mobility within cities. The city anticipates more updates as the project progresses towards implementation.
