On February 2 at its headquarters, the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will submit its 2023–24 operating budget. The BMC administrator will submit and approve the budget for the first time in nearly 38 years. Iqbal Singh Chahal has overseen the corporation's business ever since its term expired in March of last year. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act requires the BMC to submit its budget by February 5th.
In the absence of a standing committee, sources claimed that the State Government currently exercises indirect authority over the civic body. They added that the administration would leave its mark on this year's budget. The BMC presented a budget of Rs. 45,949.21 crores last year; this year, it may climb by Rs. 4,500 crores, bringing it to roughly Rs. 50,000 crore.
The city's major infrastructure projects were officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 19. He will likely return to Mumbai in February. In the next two to three years, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who oversees Urban Development, and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who oversees home, housing, and finance, have convened several meetings to discuss recent changes in the city.
The funding for infrastructure and health will be significantly increased this year. The BMC increased its health budget by 15% and set aside an additional 1,800 crore for the health sector last year in light of the Covid-19 issue and to launch HBT (Hinduhridayasamrat Balasaheb Thackeray) health facilities. In addition, many development projects, like the Goregaon-Mulund Link Route and the coastline road, are currently under construction and will require additional funding in the thousands of crores.
Along with infrastructure and health, there will be significant funding for education as well. Several civic school buildings have been restored, with an additional focus on digital classrooms, and BMC schools have embraced the ICSE, CBSE, International, and Cambridge educational patterns. There is a likelihood that this industry will receive extra monetary support. The budget for education in the previous year was 3,370.24 crore.
